Vietnam and Germany Prioritize Maritime and Logistics Cooperation to Boost Green Supply Chains

Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung suggested that Vietnam and Germany make maritime port and logistics collaboration a priority sector, while fostering stronger connectivity between the Port of Hamburg and major Vietnamese ports to drive trade and develop green supply chains.

The proposal was made during a meeting on the afternoon of October 14 with Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor and President of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, to discuss strategic directions for enhancing bilateral cooperation in ports, logistics, transportation, and renewable energy.

Hamburg stands as one of Germany’s premier economic, maritime, and logistics hubs, serving as a vital gateway connecting the European market with Vietnam and the global economy. Possessing advanced port infrastructure, extensive management expertise, and an international transport network, Hamburg is viewed as a highly potential partner to support Vietnam in elevating its logistics capacity and supply chain efficiency.

At the reception, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung praised Germany and Hamburg’s socioeconomic achievements and highlighted the positive momentum in Vietnam–Germany relations. Germany currently remains one of Vietnam’s most crucial trade, investment, and development partners within the European Union (EU).

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, significant room remains for both sides to expand cooperation, particularly amid rising global demand for international transport connectivity and sustainable supply chain development.

Elevating Logistics and Maritime Economy to Priority Sectors

Underlining the immense potential for cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung urged the Mayor of Hamburg to enhance practical collaboration with Vietnamese localities, focusing on Hamburg’s key strengths: seaport management, logistics, maritime economy, green transition, and smart city development.

Specifically, he proposed placing maritime economic cooperation and port infrastructure at the core of bilateral priorities between Vietnam and Germany, as well as Hamburg.

A key strategic orientation is to step up connectivity, information sharing, and expertise exchanges between the Port of Hamburg and Vietnam’s major seaports. This initiative is expected to enhance port operation and management capabilities, optimize transport connections, and advance logistics services.

Vietnam also aims to strengthen cooperation with Germany and European partners in transportation, accessing advanced technologies and managerial expertise to build modern seaport systems, improve logistics quality, and heighten international integration.

Expanding partnerships with Hamburg holds significant importance for aligning Vietnam’s port network with European logistics channels, facilitating seamless freight transport and bilateral trade flow.

Driving Green Logistics and Renewable Energy Supply Chains

Beyond maritime ports and logistics, green transition and clean energy featured prominently in the discussion.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung encouraged Hamburg-based enterprises to expand investments in Vietnam, particularly in renewable energy. He requested Hamburg’s support in helping Vietnamese companies integrate into local renewable energy clusters and the global offshore wind supply chain.

Both sides were encouraged to exchange knowledge on green energy development, clean power technologies, and energy transition projects.

These directives open up opportunities to align logistics development with emissions reduction targets across shipping, port management, and supply chains—a movement fully in line with global trends toward sustainable logistics and carbon-footprint reduction.

Additionally, the Vietnamese leader proposed strengthening partnership in science, technology, innovation, higher education, and vocational training based on Germany’s dual vocational training model. He also called for joint projects centered on energy transition and climate resilience.

Supporting Vietnamese Goods in Reaching German and EU Markets

To foster trade and investment, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung requested that Hamburg create favorable conditions for bilateral economic ties and actively support the promotion and consumption of Vietnamese-branded products in the German market.

Key product categories mentioned include agricultural produce, processed food, coffee, beverages, consumer goods, handicrafts, and eco-friendly products.

He also emphasized strengthening business-to-business networking to help Vietnamese exporters better meet the preferences and standards of German consumers. This will allow Vietnamese enterprises to broaden distribution networks, access the wider EU market, and maximize benefits from the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

Against this backdrop, enhancing port and logistics links between Vietnam and Hamburg will directly bolster import-export activities, streamline market access, and optimize international supply chain operations.

In addition to economic partnerships, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that Hamburg continue supporting the local Vietnamese community in integrating and thriving, thereby boosting people-to-people exchanges between both nations.

Hamburg Committed to Expanding Logistics Cooperation with Vietnam

From the German side, First Mayor Peter Tschentscher commended Vietnam’s economic achievements—particularly its impressive growth performance in 2026, its target for double-digit growth, and the rollout of major strategic infrastructure projects.

He affirmed that the Vietnam–Germany Strategic Partnership, the EVFTA, and bilateral intergovernmental agreements serve as vital impetuses for deepening two-way cooperation.

Hamburg and German enterprises are eager to establish long-term partnerships with Vietnamese counterparts and localities, particularly Ho Chi Minh City, across complementary sectors such as maritime ports, logistics, transport, wind power, higher education, and science-technology.

Hamburg also welcomed more Vietnamese business delegations to Germany to establish direct connections, explore investment opportunities, and promote trade between Vietnam, Germany, and the broader EU market.

Expanding Vietnam–Germany Logistics Ties to Drive Global Trade

The joint commitment to prioritize seaports and logistics opens new horizons for transport connectivity and international trade between Vietnam and Germany.

Leveraging Hamburg’s maritime expertise alongside Vietnam’s growing demand for infrastructure and logistics services, bilateral cooperation is poised to expand into port management, technology transfer, workforce training, and green supply chain construction.

Moving forward, promoting business connectivity, sharing best practices, and effectively leveraging the EVFTA are expected to facilitate Vietnamese exports into Germany and Europe while elevating bilateral economic cooperation to new heights.
